NYPA Internship Program

Internships with Tompkins Weekly are in partnership with The New York Press Association.

About Tompkins Weekly:

Tompkins Weekly has served Tompkins County for nearly 20 years. Our focus is on locally-driven news that serves to inform and uplift the community. We print our newspaper weekly and post articles more frequently. Community is vital to us and a large part of our identity. We urge students pursuing their career aspirations and deepening their connection to this community to apply and experience what local journalism is all about.

Responsibilities:
  • Complete each week’s “Street Beat.” which involves working with the editor to decide on a weekly question. Then, interns will go into the community to ask questions, collect responses, and take a photo of the participant for the newspaper. (On-the-street format)
  • Collaborate with the editor on social media posts. This can include weekly scheduled posts, intern takeovers, and specialty posts like live event coverage, office reels, etc.
  • Write the monthly “Thinking Ahead” column for each month of the internship. “Thinking Ahead” is our community aging column.
  • Write one town story a week. Interns will collaborate on a preset schedule with each town’s writer. This gives our writers a hand in search and allows interns to connect with the community and build their skills.
  • Provide 1-2 photos per town story for print and online use. Sources can provide these, but it is preferred that interns complete this themselves. The editor will provide assistance and photography training if needed.
  • Optional: Based on interns’ interests, there is an option for visual journalism. Interns will work with the editor to explore visually rich story ideas and create story-telling videos accompanied by a brief article (600-word minimum). Specific details on types of videos and frequency can be further discussed based on interests and comfortability.
  • A digital folder of all projects, including any intern-designed social media posts, articles, videos, and photos, should be kept throughout the internship. Notes and interview recordings/pieces of videos can and should be included. This can serve as a personal portfolio and will keep all resources in one easily accessible place. The editor will also work with interns on creating an online portfolio if needed/wanted.
  • We are open to working with interns on their particular interests and skills and incorporating that into their experience and contribution to Tompkins Weekly.
